Christians just love abusing people.
On page 77 of 'The Reason for God', Timothy Keller writes '...the rich man seems to be blind to what has happened. He still expects Lazarus to be his servant and treats him as his water boy.'
Why was the rich man asking for water? Keller explains on the same page.
'In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
Christians love abusing people so much that Keller thinks you are selfish if you ask somebody to give you water if you are in torment with fire.
I can't see Timothy Keller giving help to selfish people who ask for water because they have been badly burned, can you? How dare people being burned alive treat people as their water boy and ask them for water!

Nonbelievers are to be supressed, violently if necessary. If believers are without power, they'll leave the task to their surrogate god. Otherwise, they'll do the job themselves.
Hmm. I think the point of the story is that the rich man is still trying to order Lazarus around like a slave, having not twigged that his own failure to lift a finger in the first place is the cause of his problems.
Where does the story ever claim that the rich man had ever ordered Lazarus around like a slave?
I hope that if you are ever being tormented by fire, you can ask for water without Christians abusing you as a nasty person.
